I got a lot of comments and conversation going about my post “Doing it Different” on my other blog www.kitsune.tumblr.com. I wrote about a radio show about the Lakota tradition of celebrating and honoring a girl’s first menstruation.
The other night I sat around a bonfire and a few of us shared stories of when we first got our periods. Later I got an email asking for possible ideas for celebrating the menstruation for a young woman. I did a bit of internet searching and found this lovely writing from the book Sweet Secrets: Stories of Menstruation by Kathleen O’Grady and Paula Wansbrough (Sumach Press, 1997). It discusses first period parties, different cultural celebrations, and ideas for a girl’s own celebration. I thought mothers, aunts, friends of girls who are transitioning to womanhood may find the book interesting and helpful in creating a way of marking this special time in their lives.
